Spinach – Merlo Nero

This spinach is simply delicious. Its savoury dark green leaves are crunchy but tender and very nutritious. It’s large and thick leaves are wonderful for baking and keep quite well in the freezer. Merlo Nero begets its name from the Italian ‘black bird’. It does not tolerate the heat of the summer and will go to seed if planted too late in the spring or too early in the fall. But! It adores cold weather and is resistant to freeze up to the early minuses which makes it a great option for a first and early planting or for a last attempt at gardening in October.
