A very popular mid- to late-maturing variety that is easy to grow. Produces beautiful globe shaped, firm well flavoured bulbs with eye-catching deep red skin and royal purple inner rings and a stronger flavour than most varieties. A great addition to salads.  For scallions, harvest at 30-40 cm (12-15″) tall just before the bulb begins to swell, or harvest bulbs.

Space 12-15 cm (5-6″) apart in rows that are 45-75 cm (18-30″) apart. Thin to 8 cm (3″) apart.

Depth
Plant seeds 6-12 mm (¼-½”) deep.

Requirements
Prefers a sunny site with fertile, well-drained but moist soil.

Germination
Seeds will sprout in 10-14 days.

Timing
Start seeds indoors in February, for transplanting into the garden later in the spring; or sow directly outdoors from mid April.

Growing
Performs well planted in clusters of 4-5. Bend over any flower stalks that start to grow so the plant’s energy goes into building the bulb. Keep a clean garden; thrips live in weeds from previous years.
