The birds are chirping, the sun is shining and we’re feeling spring right around the corner!

We will be offering an early bird discount of 10% for residential clients that book before March 15th. You can respond to this email or call us to book your Urban Seedling organic vegetable garden today! The first step will be to make your 50% deposit to reserve your priority planting.

As soon as you have reserved your planting, we will send you a link and instructions to the garden planner to plan your Urban Seedling organic vegetable garden.  With your feedback and support we have been working on updating the garden planner so it is better and easier to use. One new development we are especially excited about is that you can now see multiple garden beds on the screen at the same time!

KIDS LOVE TO DIG IN THE DIRT!

School vegetable gardens are a great way for children to learn about where their food comes from and to get them excited about eating fresh vegetables. It is also a chance to learn outdoors!

Urban Seedling can help your school plan, build, plant, and maintain a school vegetable garden. We fully involve students and teachers in our planting workshops. We will help the school arrange for garden care during the summer, bring fresh ideas for students and learning in the garden, install indoor gardens, help with project continuity and management, and give extra workshops or workshop ideas. A vegetable garden is a great way to build ties between children, between parents and teachers, and within the community.

Discover plants that grow near you and how you can integrate them in your daily life. As part of the workshop, we will take a walk in the area to identify some urban medicinal plants.

Urban Gardening: Solutions for the Balcony Garden

A comparison of the pros and cons of six planting possibilities for different balcony gardens. In this workshop we examine techniques for overcoming the challenges of urban gardening. We will show how to maximize restricted spaces, a lack of sunlight and especially a shortage of time. You will learn the proportions needed for the perfect potting soil, general vegetable gardening knowledge, the varieties of fruit and vegetables to grow, and you will leave with a calendar of dates specific for balcony gardening.

Come and explore the magic of growing your own food in the city. Urban Seedling will guide you through how to over come the obstacles to vegetable gardening in the city, and specifically in Montreal’s particular growing season. You will find out how to plan, plant and care for your home organic vegetable garden, whether you are gardening in your balcony in your backyard or even on your rooftop.

The backyard orchard: growing fruits and berries

Fruit trees and berry patches grow famously in the city and make a delicious addition to any yard or green space. Learn how to choose the perfect variety for your yard, and how to plant and care for your backyard orchard.

Our facilitator is Tereska Gesing, co-founder of Urban Seedling and speaker. This workshop aims to give you tools to care for your fruit trees and the fruiting shrubs that you have or are planning to plant in your yard.

You will learn:

  • Discover the best varieties of fruit trees and shrubs to grow
  • Learn how to plant, prune and trim
  • Know how to prepare and apply organic preventative and remedial treatment methods
  • Discuss the importance of biodiversity
  • Identify companion plants and flowers
  • Explore appropriate ground covers.


Transform your harvest: learn to make fermented vegetables!

In this hands-on workshop, you’ll learn the basics of home-made  fermented vegetables with Fermentista Lia Chiasson. You’ll leave with your very own jar of kraut and a recipe booklet to get you started fermenting at home!

What you will learn:

  • A brief history of fermentation and culturing
  • Tips on fermentation vessels and storage
  • The food safety of fermented foods
  • The health benefits of a healthy intestinal flora, microorganisms and pre-digestion
  • Learn about Sauerkraut and Lacto-Fermented Vegetables

Ferments are delicious and super-healthy! Learn more about their health-promoting properties and how to make these foods part of your daily diet. There will be plenty of taster samples included throughout the workshop.

Fermenting foods is a fun and simple process. It’s much more than just a way of preserving food: it’s a method of self-sufficiency, a crucial historical component to all agricultural movements, and utterly delicious.

Please bring a small cutting board, knife, and your favorite spices.


EDIBLE LANDSCAPING: GROWING FOOD IN YOUR OWN YARD

Learn how to transform your yard into an edible oasis. Come and explore the magic of growing your own food in the city. Urban Seedling will guide you through designing your yard to be Simple, Beautiful and Productive. Learn how to incorporate fruit trees, berry patches, herb and edible flower gardens and vegetable gardens into your yard.

During this Edible Landscaping workshop we will teach you how to plan, plant and care for your fruits and vegetables.

You will learn how to:

  • Best place fruit trees, vegetables gardens and berries in your yard
  • The basics of tree pruning and garden maintenance
  • Garden maintenance throughout the season
  • Master companion planting
  • Balcony gardening solutions
  • Natural, organic control pests and disease

During the workshop we will have a hands-on design session where you will be able to work through your specific design with our help. Bring the measurements of your space.

Happy Holidays from Urban Seedling

Thank you for a fantastic 2016 season! We especially loved all of our vegetable gardening with kids. We had the joy of planting vegetable gardens with 52 daycares and schools this year.
