Ancient Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans considered summer savory to be an aphrodisiac. The story of Ancienne d’Acadie can be traced back to New Brunswick to the late 1800s. Part of the “Herbes de Provence” mix, this herb is an essential part of Acadian cuisine. It also has medicinal properties. Belongs to the mint family and is related to rosemary and thyme.

Plant seeds 8-13 cm (3-5″) apart. Space plants 50 cm (20″) apart. Grows into a 30-46 cm (12-18″) bush.

Requirements
Full sun, rich well-drained soil

Germination
Seeds sprout in 15 days.

Mint rust, powdery mildew, leaf spot

Timing
For the best germination rate, start seeds indoors in late winter Plant or direct sow outdoors after last frost.

Growing
Keep well watered during growing season. Allow plants to grow to 15 cm (6″) high before you start harvesting the leaves. Pinch the stems about halfway down, just above a leaf node, and use the trimmed leaves for the kitchen.

Harvest
Harvest the entire plant in the fall. Leaves can be dried or frozen.
