Okra, from the same family as the hollyhock, rose of Sharon and hibiscus, can grow 1-2 m (3-6′) tall. Similar in taste to eggplant, the immature pods are used for soups, canning and stews or as a fried or boiled vegetable.  Okra is also called gumbo; when cooked, its liquid is often used as a gumbo’s thickening agent.

Sow in hills 30-60 cm (12-24″) apart. When plants are 7-8 cm (3″) tall, thin to 1 per hill.

Plant seeds 2.5 cm (1″) deep.

Requirements
Full sun, good garden soil

Germination
Seeds will germinate in 2-12 days.

Aphids, cabbage worms

Timing
Sow after soil has warmed in the spring, 7-10 days after date of last frost. Prior to planting, soak the seeds in water for 12-18 hours to soften its hard seed coat.

Growing
Water regularly. Mulch after plants are well established to maintain moisture and suppress weeds.  Pick pods often while they are tender and immature.
