A peppery leafy green with a nutty aroma. Grows in a rosette about 30 cm (12″) wide and equally tall. Plants look a little like dandelions, but are bigger and more open. Leaves grow best in cool weather, and get spicier as the days get hotter. Flowers are edible as well. The Romans loved this spicy salad green. Try sprinkling on pizza just before serving.

Seed 2½ cm (1″) apart. Gradually thin to 15 cm (6″) spacings.

Depth
Plant seeds 6 mm (¼”) deep.

Requirements
Full sun is best, but will tolerate some shade. Prefers rich humusy soil with pH of 6 to 6.8, but will tolerate wide variety of conditions.

Germination
Seeds will germinate in 5-7 days.

Aphids, cabbage worms, flea beetles, slugs

Timing
Direct sow from April to September outdoors or October to March under glass. Plant every 2-3 weeks for a constant supply.

Growing
Slow bolting by providing summer shade and regular moisture.
